Ten tools I use every single day
People ask me all the time which tools actually earn their keep. Not the ones that look good in a screenshot, the ones I open before coffee and close after dinner. Here is the honest list, in the order I reach for them.
The first one is the simplest. Everything I publish runs through it, and the reason is not the feature list. It is that the thing never surprises me at the worst possible moment, which is worth more than any single feature.
Number two is where most people lose a whole afternoon. I did too, for about a year, until I changed one setting and never thought about it again. The setting is not hidden and it is not clever. It is simply off by default, and nobody tells you.
Third on the list is the one people argue with me about. It is not the market leader and it is not the cheapest. It is the one that has never once lost my work, and after you have lost an afternoon to a crash you stop caring about anything else.
Four and five belong together, so I will treat them as one. On their own each is fine. Together they remove an entire job from my week, the sort of job that feels like work but produces nothing you could show anyone.
Six is the newest arrival and the one I was most sceptical about. I gave it a fortnight to prove itself and it took about three days. I have not gone back.
Seven is boring and I will not apologise for it. Boring is the point. It does one job, it does it the same way every morning, and I have never once had to go and read its release notes to find out what changed overnight.
Eight is the one I would keep if somebody made me drop the other nine. That is not a recommendation to buy it first. It earned that position over four years of use, and on day one it would have looked like the least impressive thing on this page.
Nine is a habit more than a tool. Ten minutes, same time, every day. The tool part is almost incidental, but without something to hold the habit in place I stopped doing it inside a month, twice.
And ten is the one you already have and are not using properly. I will not name it, because for you it is probably a different one than it is for me. Go and look at what is already open in your browser right now.
