🔁 Display Rules: Frequency And Priority

Frequency capping is always on. It is what separates a campaign that converts from one that annoys people.

How often should it show:

  • Once per browsing session: the default, and the right answer most of the time
  • Every page view: for permanent announcements and bars
  • Once, ever: for a welcome mat or a cookie notice
  • Once every few days: you set the number of days between showings

Two related toggles sit underneath:

  • Never show again after someone opts in. On by default. Once somebody is on your list, stop asking.
  • Do not reopen in the same session after it is closed. On by default, so closing a popup is respected for the rest of the session.

All of this is remembered in the visitor's browser storage. If storage is blocked, for example in a locked down private mode, Engage falls back to an in memory record that at least stops the same popup opening twice in one page view.

Priority and exclusivity:

Priority is a number. When two campaigns could appear at the same moment, the lower number wins. Alongside it is a toggle: do not show at the same time as another popup.

Bars and side tabs are never treated as exclusive, because they sit in their own space and do not fight for attention. Popups are exclusive by default. If a second popup wants to fire while one is already open, Engage queues it rather than stacking it, because two popups at once is what makes a site feel broken.

The Display tab is also where you switch on external embedding and copy the snippet. That is covered in its own article.

A campaign that never fires costs one small object in memory and nothing else. Nothing is written into the page markup until the campaign actually shows, so it cannot shift your layout or be scraped for an offer the visitor was not meant to see.
