Heatmaps are drawn over your live page. There are four views, and you switch between them from a bar across the top of the page: Clicks, Mouse, Scroll and Attention.
Clicks:
Every click, shaded from cool to hot. The eight most clicked elements carry numbered badges with their click counts. Clicks on things that are not links show you what visitors expected to be clickable.
Mouse:
Where cursors hover. It is collected on desktop only and sampled, so it shows patterns, not every movement.
Scroll:
Bands down the page, each labelled with the share of visitors who reached that point. The first steep drop is where the page loses people.
Attention:
Bands shaded by the seconds visitors spent with that part of the page in view. Each band shows the average seconds and its share of the busiest band.
Filters:
The same bar has All devices, Desktop, Mobile and Tablet. On a tested page, open the map from the Heat link beside a version on the report to see that version only. The right of the bar shows how many visitors and data points are behind the view, or "No data yet for this view".
Opening a heatmap:
- Heatmaps tab: each page has Clicks, Mouse, Scroll and Attention links.
- Dashboard: the Heatmap button beside each of the busiest pages.
- Tests tab and the report: the Heatmap and Heat links.
- Any other page: on the Heatmaps tab press "Open a URL", paste the full address of a page on your site and press "Open heatmap".
These links work for logged in administrators. A page opened this way is never counted as a visit.
Scroll and attention at a glance:
On the Heatmaps tab, choose a page to see the share of visitors reaching each 5% of the page, the seconds spent per section and the most clicked elements, without leaving the screen.
What is collected, and when:
With the default settings, heat data is collected on single pages, posts and the front page from the first visitor, so a page has history before you test it. Archive and search pages are not tracked. Logged in editors, administrators and bots are left out. Data is sent when a visitor leaves, and once a minute on long visits.
The switches are in Settings under Tracking: "Track engagement and heat on every page, not only tested pages", "Collect heatmaps (clicks, scroll, attention)" and "Also collect mouse movement (desktop only, sampled)". All three are on by default.
