A replay is a snapshot of the page as the visitor saw it, with their cursor, scrolling, clicks and rage clicks played back on top.

The Replays tab:

The top line shows how many replays are stored, the space they use and the cap. Filter the list with All, Converted, "Rage clicks", Mobile and Starred. Each row shows the page, when it happened, the device and screen size, the duration, how far the visitor scrolled, the clicks and any flags. On a tested page a "saw:" badge names the version that visitor was given.

The player:

Press Watch. The player has Play and Pause, a speed box with 1×, 2×, 4× and 8× (it opens on 2×), a bar to jump to any moment, and Close.

Keeping and deleting:

Click the star to keep a replay. Starred replays are never removed by the cap or the cleanup. The bin deletes one replay, and "Delete all unstarred" clears the rest. There is no undo.

What is and is not recorded:

  • Typed text is always masked. The replay shows dots, never the words, and form fields are emptied in the snapshot.
  • Scripts are removed from the snapshot and are never stored.
  • A rage click is three or more clicks in almost the same spot in well under a second.
  • "Converted" means a goal on that page view was reached in the browser, such as a click, form, scroll or time goal.

Settings, under "Session replays":

  • "Record session replays". On by default.
  • "Also mask all page text in replays (for pages showing personal data)". Off by default.
  • "Record this % of eligible visitors". 100 by default.
  • "Skip sessions shorter than (seconds)". 5 by default.
  • "Keep at most (replays)". 300 by default. The newest are kept. The screen notes that 300 replays is roughly 30 to 60 MB.
  • "Max size per replay (KB)". 400 by default. A visit whose snapshot and movements exceed this is skipped.

Replays older than the retention window in "Privacy & retention" (90 days by default) are removed by the daily cleanup, apart from starred ones.

If the list is empty:

Check that replays are switched on, remember that visits shorter than the minimum are skipped, and that logged in editors, administrators and bots are never recorded.
