🧭 Attribution Models And Navigation-Only Links

Attribution decides which tracking link gets credit when a visitor clicks several links before converting. WCT gives you a global default, a per link override, and a way to exclude internal links from the decision entirely.

The Two Models:

  • Last Click. The most recent tracking link the visitor clicked gets the credit.
  • First Click. The link that originally brought the visitor in gets the credit.

The setting applies to both Leads, or Conversion A, and Sales, or Conversion B.

Setting The Global Default:

Go to the Settings tab, then ⚙️ General Settings, then Attribution Model. Choose Last Click or First Click and save.

Overriding One Link:

The Create Link and Edit Link forms both carry an Attribution Model dropdown. It offers Use Global Setting, Last Click, or First Click, so you can make a single link behave differently without touching the site wide default.

The Navigation-Only Checkbox:

This is the cleanest answer to the most common attribution complaint. On the Create or Edit Link form, tick 🧭 Navigation-only link. Clicks on that link are still recorded for stats, but the visitor's attribution cookies are not updated. Sales then credit whichever primary link the visitor originally entered through.

When To Use It:

Tick Navigation-only on internal funnel links, which typically means download buttons, support page CTAs, footer links and thank you page next step buttons. Leave it unticked on the links you actually promote, because those are the ones that should own the attribution.

Why This Matters On Marketplace Sales:

Server to server IPN postbacks cannot read browser cookies, so the click ID has to be baked into the checkout URL at redirect time. If a thank you page button overwrites the attribution cookie just before checkout, the sale credits the button rather than the traffic source you paid for. Navigation-only stops that happening.

Resetting Your Own Attribution Cookies:

When you test a funnel yourself, your browser holds WCT cookies for 30 days, so every fresh test inherits the oldest first click value from weeks ago. It looks broken when the code is working perfectly. Three ways to clear your own browser:

  1. Settings tab, then 🛠 Tools, then the 🍪 Reset Attribution Cookies button.
  2. Load yoursite.com/?wct_reset_attribution=1 in any browser, which is handy for bookmarklets, scripted tests, or team members helping you test.
  3. Open browser devtools, then Application, then Cookies, and delete wct_click_id, wct_click_id_js and wct_first_click_id for your domain.

The reset only affects the browser you run it in. Nothing is deleted from the WCT database, and the next tracking link you click is recorded as a fresh first click.

This Tool Is For You, Not Your Customers:

Real visitors never need the reset URL. Do not put it in customer facing pages, autoresponder sequences or affiliate material, because clearing cookies mid funnel would destroy their attribution.
