The trigger is the front door of an automation. Eight are available:

  • Joins a list: fires when someone is added to a list, any list or one specific list
  • Confirms their subscription: fires when a double opt-in is confirmed
  • Gets a tag: fires when a tag is applied, any tag or one specific tag
  • Submits a form: fires on any form, or one specific form
  • Makes a purchase: fires when a sale is recorded, optionally only for one product
  • Opens any email: fires on a real open, machine prefetch hits are already filtered out
  • Clicks a link in any email: fires on any click, or only links whose URL contains a phrase you set
  • Manually enrolled only: nobody enters on their own, you add people yourself

Who is allowed in:

  • Only Active automations accept new people
  • Each person enters an automation once. Tick Allow Re-entry if finished people may go through again
  • Imported or migrated contacts that arrived under the silent import lock never enter automatically. Enrolling them from the Subscribers screen is always your explicit choice

Enrolling people by hand:

On the Subscribers screen, tick anyone, or use Select All Matching with a filter, and choose Enroll In Automation. This is also how you run existing subscribers through a flow that was built after they joined.

Tags added by an automation step do not fire tag triggers, deliberately, so two automations can never chase each other in a loop.
