The most dangerous moment in email marketing is the day you move an existing list into a new tool. Safe Mode exists so that day is boring.
What Safe Mode does:
When it is on, every outbound email is blocked at the connector layer. That means broadcasts, sequence emails, welcome emails and double opt-in confirmations all stop. Nothing reaches a mail server, no matter which part of the plugin tries to send it.
You can still do everything else: import subscribers, build lists and segments, design broadcasts, and set up sequences.
It often turns itself on:
On first load the plugin looks for signs that this is a live production site rather than a test install. It checks things like your WordPress user count, how long the site has existed, whether there are older published posts, and whether large visitor or sales tables are present. If enough of those signals appear, Safe Mode switches on by itself and tells you why.
An amber banner sits at the top of every AI Mailer screen while Safe Mode is on, so it is impossible to forget.
The audit trail:
Every blocked send is logged with the address it would have gone to and when. The Safety tab lists the recent ones and a running total. This is how you prove to yourself that nothing leaked during the migration.
Turning it off:
Go to AI Mailer, then Safety. You must tick a confirmation box before the disable button will work, which stops an accidental click from switching your list live.
One important point: turning Safe Mode off does not suddenly start emailing everyone you imported. Imported subscribers carry a separate, permanent protection described in the silent import lock article.
